When I do a YO before a purl, I simply don't move the yarn to the front of the needle before the purl like you usually would. I just do the purl laving the yarn in back and the yo is created by itself. The yarn automatically wraps around the needle when you purl. It goes against everything you've ever taught a beginner knitter, but it makes a nice tight yo as opposed to doing an entire wrap around the needle.

Does that make sense?
